Demarest Nature Center
The Demarest Nature Center is the borough's signature visitor destination. Its current visitor information describes a 55-acre preserve of woodlands, streams, wetlands and meadow habitat with more than two miles of trails. Admission is free and trails are open during daylight hours.
About 1.2 miles and generally easy, with woodland scenery, interpretive features and bird-watching opportunities.
About 0.8 mile, easy to moderate, with a stream crossing and one of the preserve's most photographed locations.

Duck Pond & historic Demarest
The stone depot is one of Demarest's defining landmarks. The railroad helped transform the community in the 19th century, and the depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The pond and adjacent open space sit beside the historic station and are used for recreation and community events, including Nature Center activities.
Demarest retains early stone and Victorian-era homes that reflect its farm, mill and railroad-era development.

Current visitor information states that free on-site parking is available. Special events may use additional nearby street parking; follow posted signs.

Event-day parking: Oktoberfest, Demarest Day and other community events can change normal parking patterns. Follow temporary signs and organizer instructions.
Transportation
Demarest is primarily a driving, cycling and local-walking community. Current Borough planning documents state that Demarest itself does not have NJ Transit passenger rail or bus service; bus routes are available in surrounding communities including Closter, Cresskill, Dumont and Haworth.
Route 166 serves Cresskill and provides service toward New York. Other routes operate from surrounding Northern Valley communities; verify the best stop for your trip.
The historic Demarest depot is no longer a passenger station. Do not plan a rail trip directly into Demarest.
The George Washington Bridge and Palisades Interstate Parkway provide the major regional approach from New York City; local roads complete the trip.
Newark Liberty and LaGuardia are major commercial airports; Teterboro primarily serves general and business aviation. Travel time can vary sharply with traffic.
